SYNOPSIS

Director·Speaker Charice Rust, Jonathan Morgan

<By a Thread> is an ensemble aerial circus work featuring seven acrobats and 30 metres of rope. Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around the performers' bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. The actions of one acrobat affect and impact the movements of others in a mesmerising negotiation of cause and effect. A circus, by the nature of the physicality and risk present in the art form, necessarily develops high levels of trust and communication within ensembles. <By a Thread> was created to bring a new dimension to these ‘acrobatic’ relationships, and the parallels draw to our everyday interactions. Virtuosic acrobatics and intricate choreography weave through moments of confusion, hilarity, romance, playfulness, fear, and friendship. The relationships between ensemble members on stage mimic the everyday relationships we have as human beings. The acrobatic ensemble is the vehicle through which ideas of risk and trust are explored, creating an intimate experience around the dangers and joys implicit in engaging with others. The counterpoint to the danger in a circus is the joy that is integral to working as an ensemble, the joy of taking risks, and uncovering the possibilities at the intersection of both. More than mere bodies in space, By a Thread is an exploration of physical, emotional, and relational tensions.

PITCHING PURPOSE

To connect with the South Korean performing arts community to discuss opportunities to present performances of our award-winning show <By a Thread>, the show combines aerial and acrobatics delivered by seven acrobats. The show is almost entirely non-verbal and is perfect for linguistically diverse audiences, while providing an opportunity for cross-cultural appreciation of the show’s concepts of trust, risk, and joy. We have been in discussions with several South Korean festivals after the season in Adelaide and the APAM pitch in 2020 regarding bringing the show to South Korea in 2021. PAMS would be a timely opportunity to build on these relationships and form new relationships. We are particularly keen to make connections with presenters that have engaged with circuses in their programming or are looking to present circuses to their audiences. This includes presenters of versatile spaces such as theatres as well as festivals interested in activating outdoor spaces. The show has been performed both indoors and outdoors and is adaptable to different outdoor performance environments.

ONE FELL SWOOP CIRCUS

One Fell Swoop uncovers the intrinsic metaphor within a circus to create stark yet beautiful audience experiences. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the company combines ambitious concepts with visceral physicality, bringing audiences the invigorating mix of joy and risk inherent to group acrobatics. One Fell Swoop sits at the cutting edge of contemporary circus practice, creating traditional theatre shows and outdoor circus installations. Recent performance highlights of their premiere show <By a Thread> include the Xintiandi Festival in Shanghai, the IPAY in Philadelphia, and festivals in New Zealand and France; as well as an upcoming Australian National Tour in 2020. They have also presented their outdoor installation piece <Kilter>, an installation of a circus and live music, in gardens, public squares, and events around Australia. One Fell Swoop connects a highly skilled ensemble with innovative apparatuses, where classic techniques are used in expansive ways and new ideas are made possible.
